JD Backhoe question: I am considering adding a backhoe to my JD 5000/ten series tractor at some point down the road. When the backhoe is attached, and you are sitting in the backhoe seat, is it possible to move the tractor? It seems to me that if you are trenching, you would need to hop in and out of the seats quite often in order to keep moving the tractor along if it can't be done from the backhoe operators station...thanks all.

Steve; Thank you for taking the time for your response to this gentleman'squestion. More of us newbe's in the compact tractor world need this kind of information for safe operation of our "New Toy's". I know you are a DEALER, I wish we had more DEALER'S of your caliber throughout the U.S. to buy our tractors from. Unfortunately for me, you are not a JD dealer.David ....

Steve's comments and cautions about backhoe use are valuable and accurate. I've run across a couple of books on equipment operation which may be interesting to you or other readers of this forum. Try your local library, or buy your own copy:Backhoe Loader Operation, by R. Christian, available from Amazon via the following link: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0924659726/kenburnerssmallt.Operating Techniques of the Tractor Loader Backhoe, by G. Ober, an extremely comprehensive book available from http://www.equiptrain.com/.Moving the Earth, by H. Nichols, an encyclopedic volume containing everything about excavating techniques and the equipment used to do it. Wouldn't have to go that far. Just get Kubota to get rid of the clutch and put the brakes on that side. (I'm disabled and can't use my left leg continuously) I do use the brakes occasionally which I can manage as long as it is not offten. Other than that I like the Orange just as much as the Green.David ....

I'll be hopping on and off a lot doing a 6' trench with my baby hoe(2' bottom @ 6'). I took Steve's comments to heart last summer before deliveryof my hoe. The trucker who delivered the hoe and put it on the hitch bolteda mounting plate on the draw bar about 6" from the support and wasn't sure thetop links that seemed like stablizers were necesary (the links actually arethe lock downs). I corrected the mounting and adjustment. It wasn't exactly the driver's job to know about these things, but it is my job.Yes, my hitch did activate unexpectedly, although I was operating the loader atthe time. Thanks to Steve's comments all that happened was that the pump andengine laboured for a few seconds.Despite Steve's comments, I fell into a bad habit. I tend to reposition thehoe during maintenance while standing on the ground and operating the tractor hydrolics with one hand and the hoe with the other. Pull a wronglever and the stabilizer comes down on your foot. Think I'll stop doing this.Tom ....

Noticed that there have not been a lot of additions to this section for some time. I was courious about the JD's 48 hoe on a 4600. I have not purchased the unit yet but does this unit have the same concerns for backhoe hookup and use? I had been a Safety Engineer but primarily a Industrial Hygienist for various companies and really take to heart information such as Steve's. I will want to research this information before any operation. My dealer is selling a 4500 with all kinds of attachment per a buyers request, to it, including a backhoe. He is not really sure how it will go together. I will be seeing him soon because I want to see how it is hooked up because I to have an interest in the backhoe use on a 4600. I will certainly make sure I have passed this information on. I have already placed it in a Microsoft word document (giving credit to the writer) and placed comment on books that were also mentioned.

Sincerely (and Thanks for the Safety comments)
